Port of Helsingborg tests autonomous container cleaning in collaboration with MCS Robotics
The Port of Helsingborg is taking the next step in its focus on innovation and sustainable technology through a new collaboration with MCS Robotics AB. Together, the parties will test an autonomous cleaning robot, Box Cleaner, which automatically cleans containers in the port environment.
“This type of technology can, in the long run, contribute to more efficient handling, improved working environments and reduced climate impact. By testing and evaluating the system in our real operational setting, we gain valuable insights into how automated solutions can support our processes,” says Mark Wieden, Key Account Manager at the Port of Helsingborg.
The robot solution is designed for logistics and industrial environments where high capacity and precision are required. It can perform several types of cleaning methods, such as dry ice blasting and high-pressure water jet cleaning with integrated detergents. With the help of AI-based image recognition, the system can detect residues, verify cleaning results, and document completed operations. The technology is designed to minimise environmental impact by reducing water consumption and forms the basis for the long-term goal of achieving carbon-neutral container cleaning.
“We hope that this project will expand the Port’s range of services and give our customers new opportunities in both food-grade and RDF-related container handling,” continues Mark Wieden.
During the winter, a robot will be on site in the port for live testing and evaluation. The results will form the basis for further decisions regarding future applications.
The collaboration aligns with the Port of Helsingborg’s goal of driving development towards a more sustainable and efficient port where digital technology, automation, and innovation contribute to safe and resource-efficient logistics flows.
